The Erzbergrodeo Red Bull Hare Scramble is already well known to be the toughest hard enduro race in the world. This year, for the 25th edition, Red Bull Media House released an AR experience with the goal to give the users the chance to experience the Iron Giant in an informative and entertaining way. Users around the world should be enabled to get in touch with the Erzberg Rodeo Race in an innovative mobile game:

place the mountain in your living room, watch 360° action & explanation videos of some of the hot spots of the track and furthermore: try to tackle the most challenging areas of the race on your own in augmented reality.

We realized a unity application based on ARcore and ARkit within the existing RBTV native App. To reach this we cooperated closely with RBTV App Team in California. The AR application was marketed and played all around the world.

The Erzbergrodeo Hare Scramble AR experience is a part of the Red Bull TV App. At the heart of the experience lies a fun arcade game that gives the players direct control of an Enduro Racer taking on the various challenges the Erzberg has to offer.

The Game was a huge success. Players all around played the game repeatedly. During the race weekend an accompanying digital ad and content campaign lead to a peak in useage. Since then a mentionable amount of organic visitors with engaging behaviour is using the game.

Unfortunately Red Bull can not make these numbers public.

The App still runs prominently in the RBTV App.

This epic racing event is an annual highlight in the lives of racing fans worldwide. Of course, not everyone will be able to be there. But when the fans can’t come to the mountain, we’ll make sure the mountain comes to the fans - in glorious Augmented Reality.

A 3D model of the Erzberg serves as the main application hub. This model is divided into various checkpoints that can be accessed by a simple tap. Once a selection has been made, the mountain in front of the user is replaced by an accurate recreation of the actual zone and the race is on.

The controls are inspired by slot-car racing and very easy to grasp: Pressing and holding down a single button accelerates the bike. Letting go of the button activates the brakes. But even though the controls are very simple, the actual game is anything but easy. The button has to be pressed at exactly the right moments, in order to keep the rider from crashing.

Also 360°Videos are accessible to explore the Erzberg.
